Coming to you from beautiful Vancouver, BC!

This was a sort of a last minute trip but one that was well worth it! Thankfully, my Nana lives in Vancouver which means not only do I get to see her too, but free food and a place to stay!... things that suddenly become invaluable to a university student.  The weather is absolutely beautiful and there is an awesome vibe around the city because of the olympics! I have gotten to go to a couple of events which has been phenomenal and saw Alex Bilodeau awarded the first Canadian gold on home soil!!!  It's been such a needed break to get away and just forget about studying for a few days.  Today I'm going back downtown to see the sights and then I'm going to a hockey game tonight!  Tomorrow I head back to the valley to visit some friends before making my way back to Calgary.

Midtermsssssss

It is that time already . . . when the library is packed and everyone is stressing about midterm and papers.  This week for me is especially crazy, with three midterms, three papers, a portfolio to complete and a statistics assignment all to finish before the end of the week! Oh and did I mention having to work on top of that?!  Needless to say, I have spent minimal hours sleeping and maximum hours pouring over textbooks and spending hours at my computer.  Thankfully, this week will end on a high note with the start of reading break!  It comes at perfect timing because without it I would probably go crazy!  I think I might go for a couple of days to Vancouver to visit some friends and family.  It will be really neat too cause the Olympics will add a really cool vibe to the city I’m sure!

Well, I should probably get back to studying . . . unfortunately.

South Africa here I come!

This past Thursday was Community Day here at Ambrose.  Each individual program gets together for the day and does different activities together as a group.  It is a cool way of meeting with other students here at Ambrose that may not necessarily be close friends, but who are going through the same classes, material and stress that you are going through.  For the Behavioural Sciences program there were several seminars throughout the day about practicum placement, travel study, neuroscience as well as a seminar about how to decode your personality through your handwriting!  We also got together, all students and faculty of BHS, and had lunch together that was catered by the school. It was really nice excuse to just hang out and talk with other students and staff about the semester so far.

My favorite part about the day was definitely the seminar about travel study to South Africa. The BHS program has developed a partnership with the Seed of Hope in Bhekulwandle, South Africa, a community severely impacted by the AIDS crisis and facing poverty and high unemployment.  In May of next year, 2011, students from BHS have the opportunity to explore firshand the intersection of sociological and community psychology theories and their application in an international setting.  While in South Africa we will have the opportunity of being involved in community development, addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis, as well as spending time with the children of Seed of Hope and developing programs for them.  Not only does this sound like an incredible opportunity but it also counts for credit!  Needless to say, I am so excited about this prospect and will be looking into it more as it comes closer.  It seems so cool that we will have a chance to really put into practice what I have been learning hear over these past years at Ambrose.  All of the students that I have talked to that have been on this trip say it is very impactful and life changing in a lot of ways!  

Settling in, again...

Hello again!

So, I finalllllly have registered and paid for all my classes and am starting to get into the groove of things again for this semester.  It always seems to take me a few weeks to get into the rhythm of things.  Now here we are though, and it’s almost the end of January!  Winter semester is really exciting because there always seems to be a lot going on with sports and getting ready for LYC.   This past week I was able to go down to California with my mom for a few days and visit my great aunt there.  It was good to be able to just get away for a bit…. you don’t realize how busy you are until you leave it all behind for a few days! This past Sunday a bunch of girls got together at my friend’s apartment for a girls night.  It turned out to be a pretty big crowd and it was so fun to just hang out outside of school and get to know more girls from Ambrose.  Its times like that when you realize how great they community at Ambrose is and how welcoming and accepting the people are!  I’ve heard a lot of new students say that one thing they really enjoy about Ambrose is the community we have… I agree! 

Well, I should probably head out.  I’m just at Starbucks now catching up and reading and emails and I have class soon!
